Top Movies Set Within The 1950s

The Vintage Vibes movie theaer marquee reads "Back To The Future"

Although these movies did not take place in the 1950s, they did a nice job of trying to emulate the timeframe with their wardrobe, dialogue, and settings. For this list, we are focusing only on films that do not detail a specific historical event, and are rather mainly fictionalized. If you’re a fan of the 1950s aesthetic, you should definitely check out these films! We’ll keep spoilers to a minimum.

Movies That Take Place In The 1950s

  1. Pleasantville

Released in 1998, this film stars Tobey Maguire & Reese Witherspoon as siblings. Within the film, the pair are transported into a 1950s sitcom where everything is black and white. We see societal changes as the pair shake up the town. The film does a nice job of creating that Levittown feel that is associated with the 1950s. Plus, it pulls in some common 50’s cliches as well to give you that classic 1950’s stereotype.

  1. Grease

This musical starring John Travolta and Oliva Newton John was released in 1978. It follows teenagers attending Rydell high school in the 1950s. The story focuses on the budding romance between Danny Zuko and Sandy Olsson. We get a look at 1950s cars, proms, and date nights. In addition to some of its own original music, the film incorporates covers of some popular 1950’s songs on its soundtrack like “Blue Moon”.

  1. Stand By Me

This coming of age story written by Stephen King was released in 1986. Unlike his typical works of horror, King explores a journey that 4 young boys take in 1959 to find a dead body. This movie has a soundtrack jam packed with 50’s hits like “Rockin’ Robin” and “Lollipop”. This is a great movie that is enhanced through the casting and devotion to the time period.

  1. Blast From The Past

Although this movie technically takes place in the late 90s, the main protagonist lives in a late 1950s inspired world for most of his life. Brendan Fraser stars in this movie where a family resides in a fallout shelter for 35 years. Fraser’s character ventures above ground to see what has changed. The underground bunker is definitely a blast from the past, as we see vintage furniture and building styles reminiscent of the 1950s within.

  1. Back To The Future

In this science fiction hit, Marty Mcfly travels back in time from 1985 to 1955 to help his parents fall in love. The movie features classic 1950’s songs like “Earth Angel” and gives us a look into a retro diner too. We get a good look at how 30 years has changed a small town from this movie.

  1. Flipped

This 2010 film took place in 1957, and showcases a growing love between two young neighbors. Rob Reiner directed the film that focuses on two adolescents who at first do not really see eye to eye, but grow an appreciation for each other.
